School Programs

We are blessed to have many programs for students and parents to use and fortunate to have dedicated people to run and help out these programs. These programs are to give families some need help from time to time. Whether it be a before and after school drop off program or needing their child to be picked up by a school bus, parents should feel comfortable knowing that, together as a community, we will be there for each other. At school, we provide an athletics program for those who wish to experience competitive, team sports. Nutrition is so important in helping students to function and to succeed in school. This is why we offer a Lunch Program where we prepare food that is fresh, nutritious, and thoughtfully put together. Our Lady of Victory School has parents and their children's best interest at heart.

Full Day, All Day Kindergarten

We believe that offering a full day all day kindergarten allows students to start school off on the right foot. Students in kindergarten have so much to learn and coming to school part time makes it difficult to achieve school goals. These include literacy, numeracy, social skills, classroom citizens, and school routines. As well, we understand that parents have to work and that finding child care for either half the day or every other day is difficult and expensive.

School Busing

We have contracted First Student Canada for our school bus transportation needs. We cater primarily to the Greater Downtown Area and South Winnipeg. Majority of our students come from the Downtown area or just North and Northeast of there. We go as far south as St. Mary's Avenue, as far East as Lagimodiere Boulevard, and as far North as Pipeline Road and Melrose Avenue. However, every year we will re-evaluate the bus route to be able to accommodate new students who wish to use the bus. If you want to see a closer look at the 2015 busing area click the image below.

We offer some a door to door service but mostly spot pickups. Sometimes the bus cannot go down streets due to narrow streets or tight corners. Our earliest pickup is about 6:30-45am and the latest is about 8:20am. Unfortunately, parents are not able to request times as it is up to the bus company and their route that determines pickup and drop off times.

Our cost is very affordable, especially when you consider the cost of a vehicle, gas, insurance, and of coarse time and convenience.

Before & After School Program

We are cognisant of the fact that parent's schedules do not always match academic school-day schedules. Our Before and After School Program (BASP), provides a convenient service for working parents who need a supervised environment for their children before and after school hours. The program is offered Monday through Friday. The before school program is available from 7:00 a.m. - 8:20 a.m. (flat $5.00) and the after school program from 3:15 p.m. - 5:30 p.m (2:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. on Early Dismissal Days). Cost is $5.00 per hour.

Our program is affordable and is designed to provide a relaxed, safe and comfortable atmosphere where children feel "at home" , before school starts and / or before going home. A variety of activities are available and each child is able to participate in an informal setting. The BASP fosters constructive activity and children may work individually or in small groups.

Children can expect comfortable surroundings, choices within structured limits, socialization, quiet time space in which to do homework, and enrichment opportunities. Parents can expect a friendly and safe atmosphere for their children, qualified and dedicated supervisors, and a feeling of support. The BASP is offered on a regular basis or on an "as-needed basis".

Athletic Program

OLVThunderLogo3.jpg Discipline, team work, friendship, leadership skills, decisions making skills, social skills, increased physical fitness levels, and life long physical literacy are just some of the benefits to joining an athletic team. We see the importance that athletics can provide for students and we are proud to provide this in our full size gym as well a outdoor track within walking distance. Our staff/coaches will ensure that student safety, sportsmanship, cooperation, and fair play are at the cornerstone of our program.

We are a member of the Manitoba Catholic School Athletic Association (M.C.S.A.A.). Our school team - OLV Thunder - is able to play competitive or developmental level sports for our school. Our sports teams participate in season play and tournaments in Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Soccer, and Track & Field at the Junior High Level with occasional tournaments for grades 5 & 6.  For more information, visit the Athletics page.

We offer transportation in our 15 passenger van to students who are unable to find rides to and from sporting events. We understand that parents have to work or don't have a means to drive students to or from games and so we try to help families out.

Lunch Program

Children need well-balanced meals for good physical, mental, emotional and social development. Indeed, good nutrition is critical to student achievement. The better nourished student will generally have better attendance, be more attentive and have more energy to cope with the challenges of the school day.

The goal of the Lunch Program, at Our Lady of Victory School, is to ensure that all our pupils have the opportunity of receiving high quality, nutritionally balanced, affordable meals, during each school day. The lunches contain a variety of foods and try to offer a balanced meal based on the Canadian Food Guide. Students do get exposure to new and exciting choices that they would not have at home.

The program provides meals that are consistent with dietary guidelines and current scientific nutritional recommendations. Monthly menus are planned to incorporate dietary guidelines, including; an increase in fibre and a reduction in fat, sugar and salt. We will use chicken products over beef in many of our items to accommodate families dietary request. About half of the menu options are vegetarian meals. As a Catholic School, Friday's items will always be meatless. Menus are planned at the school level to incorporate suggestions and preferences from parents.

Through the program, students learn good nutrition habits that provide a basis for better health throughout their lives. The program is reinforced by the teaching staff in the class rooms and focuses on:

  • Eating for health meeting the dietary guidelines
  • Making food choices nutrition education
  • Maximizing resources getting the best value
